The Bellmont Braves have been a fixture on the Concordia Cadets girls soccer schedule for a decade, but the program, which will join the ACAC next season, has not recorded a victory over the Bellmont program in that time until Wednesday night, when Kori Brown’s goal and two assists gave the visiting Cadets a 3-1 win.
There have been some famous draws in the series between the two schools, with the contest usually taking place in early September, but the Cadets have not beaten coach Steve Lee and coach Rich Skaggs in the past ten seasons until Wednesday.
Josephine Dodds scored the opening goal in the contest at 15′ and the Cadets carried the 1-0 lead into halftime in the blazing heat. When the two teams came back out for the second half, it was an unfortunate foul in the box that gifted Brown the chance to score from the stripe to make it 2-0.
Bellmont avoided the shutout with perhaps the goal of the season so far. Mary Bleke made one of her nine saves on the night and sent a booming punt downfield, where Oni Krueckeberg was anxiously awaiting in the 68th minute. The Braves’ leading scorer knifed through the Cadet back line and slotted it past the keeper to get the Braves on the board.
Emma Groves sealed off the Braves with a goal on an assist from Brown for the 3-1 win.
The loss dropped the Bellmont season record to 2-5-1 ahead of a big week upcoming that will see the Braves travel to Huntington North in the NE8 and to a very talented and undefeated Northrop team (broadcast on 92.7 FM) on Thursday. The Braves will also host Canterbury on Saturday.
Bellmont took the JV match on a goal by Natalie Dyer, 1-0.
