Another NE8 match, another clean sheet.
The Bellmont Braves took care of business despite some home-field shenanigans by the East Noble Knights and put themselves in a position to play DeKalb on Monday night for the outright NE8 title.

DeKalb’s 2-1 loss to Leo last week already ensured that the Braves would win at least a share of the conference title with a win Wednesday night, but the Bellmont girls have no plans of sharing the hardware with anyone.

Monday’s game with the Barons in Decatur will be WZBD’s featured soccer match of the week on 92.7 FM.
Coach Steve Lee’s team went another 80 minutes in the conference without allowing a goal. So far this season, they’ve played 480 minutes without conceding.

Maggie Wilson got the scoring started in both halves, putting the team up 2-0 on the East Noble turf.

Kaitlyn Barton continued her brilliance with the free kick, scoring from 30 yards out after an East Noble foul. Her shot went into the top corner and EN keeper Maitlen Booth had no chance to stop it.

The Knights fell to 0-6 in the conference. They’ll have an opportunity to play New Haven next week, with the winner avoiding the last-place finish.

The NE8 schedule works out nicely with this year’s standings, with the 0-6 teams facing each other for a good consolation round and the 6-0 (and 5-1) teams (Bellmont and DeKalb) playing a convenient championship head-to-head.

A loss by Bellmont on Monday would mean a three-way sharing of the title between the Braves, Barons and Leo Lions.

The final goal of Wednesday’s night’s victory for Bellmont came from Oni Krueckeberg, who continues to grow as a player and goalscorer in her sophomore season.
