“They had it for sale, we were in the market – and we got it!” exclaimed Adam Eguia, an official with VFW Post 6236 in Decatur.
Eguia was referring to the local VFW’s purchase of the former Elks Lodge building in Decatur. The purchase price was not disclosed.

The deal was quickly done, within five days of the building at 327 N. Second St. going on the market. Final papers were signed last week.
The VFW currently is located at 127 N. Third St.
The move to the new building is likely to require a few weeks. Eguia said some upgrading of the new home will be required and licenses transferred.
“So it will probably be late October or early November. We’re going from a small place to a much larger place,” Eguia laughed.
Dwindling numbers in membership and finances saw the Elks lodge close its doors on last March 22 after operating for over 118 years. It was merged with the Bluffton Elks organization.

The Decatur VFW has 434 members, including comrades – fellow veterans who share a unique bond from their military service, particularly those who served overseas – and auxiliary.
“We give a lot of money to the community and non-profits. Last year gave away over $27,000,” Eguia noted.

Greg Light is post 6236’s commander. Eguia is president of the auxiliary and also of the VFW’s Fourth District.
The Third St. lodge is likely to go up for sale after the move to Second St. is completed.
