Conferences, vacations, and no-shows trimmed the number of on-hand officials as well as the agenda for the July 21 meeting of Decatur City Council.
Mayor Dan Rickord was attending a conference of mayors and council members Scott Murray and Jenny Bowers-Shultz were unable to attend the meeting in City Hall’s council chambers.
Councilman Matt Dyer took over the mayor’s chair as mayor pro-tem, joined up front by council members Tyler Fullenkamp and Abby Wilder, along with Clerk-Treasurer Eran Hackman and City Attorney Anne Razo.
A couple of department heads were missing; that list no longer includes the now-retired Bill Carpenter.
Business was held as usual, though. With the mayor pro tem still able to vote via his at-large council position, that made for a three-person quorum for both the council and board of works and safety.
The two meetings lasted a little less than an hour, due in part to the fact that one group on the agenda wasn’t present and another situation was resolved before the meeting.
Plus, a possible festival presentation wasn’t made.
As noted, however, some business was held:
* Utilities Superintendent Erin Heyerly was given permission by the board of works and safety to begin the process to fill an opening at the treatment plant.
The opening came about as Seth Haines moved to the position of assistant water superintendent, replacing Carpenter.
* Street/Sewage Superintendent Matt Schultz also received permission from the board to fill an opening, this one in the street department created by the departure of Brandon Wideman.
* Leases for the Family Center Services and the Literacy Council were renewed for one year by the board.
