Two clutch victories by a pair of ninth graders were the perfect gift for four Bellmont seniors in the lineup, helping the Braves maintain their recent superiority over the Carroll Chargers with a 39-31 victory on Senior Night.
Oliver Faurote’s 26-second fall at 120 put the Braves in position to win and the come-from-behind masterclass of Charlie Faurote clinched the victory, with Chuck scoring the fall 30 seconds into the third period, sending the Bellmont bench and the fans into a frenzy.
Seniors Xavior Palacios and Grady Baker put together important victories in the early stages, with Palacios scoring a fall and Baker beating highly-ranked Bradyn Lothamer for the second straight year.
Baker was 1-1 with Lothamer in the third, pushing for the opening takedown. He was given the lead with a second stalling warning, one which would have held up, but Baker scored a late takedown just to make sure, pumping his fists to get the crowd excited.
Oliver Faurote’s win was so meaningful because the two Carroll lightweights before him wrestled to their reputation, dominating on their feet and pushing the visitors’ lead to 20-9.
Ben Mills backed up Faurote’s win with a victory at 126, setting up the remaining Braves’ middleweights for success.
The home team then set up Charlie Faurote to be the hero, with brother Henry Faurote, Gabe Myers and Sam Wolpert all lighting up the scoreboard for a trifecta of tech falls.
Chuck was thrown to his back and trailed 7-0 in the first period, needing to bridge just to last into the second period. The frosh bounced back and found two takedowns and eventually knotted the match at 9-9. He then flipped the script and took down Evan Snyder to take the lead, eventually lighting up the large and loud crowd with maximum effort to get the pin.
It was an important victory for the team, who needed the confidence heading into a very difficult NE8 tournament this weekend.
