NEW HAVEN – It would be quite a claim to say that Adams Central didn’t even need a win from Kale Beer Tuesday night to beat New Haven, a team bound for 3A Team State in less than a month, and, although the margin of victory could have stood up against a close loss by Beer, it was ultimately the junior’s last-second takedown against defending semi-state champion Bakari Cooper that will go down as the defining moment in the bout, handing momentum to the BAGUBAS.

Knowing that the two teams might face each other again on Saturday, there was little hesitation from the New Haven coaching staff to try something out of the ordinary and that came with a flip-flop at 126 and 132. Cooper, who just wrestled 120 against Bellmont Saturday, was penciled into the lineup at 126, but when the time came to check in, coach Jimmy Linn notified the table that Cooper would wait until 132 and Landon Lawhorne would take his place.
The moved looked to be genius when Lawhorne scored a quick 16-1 tech to break an 18-18 tie.

But New Haven got more than they bargained for with Beer, who scored the opening takedown against Cooper with his defense in the first period. Waiting for opportunities to score from Cooper’s shot, Beer was called for stalling twice in the second period, knotting the match at 3-3 heading into the final period.
Beer got his escape and re-gained the lead, but another stalling call saw both wrestlers on their feet with the score tied at 4-4. That’s when Beer scored at the edge of the mat, outlasting Cooper’s whizzer and sending the visiting crowd into a frenzy with a 7-4 win.

Mav Dubach ground out a tough win at 150 against Daniel Espinosa and Dylan Ogg, Brason Schortgen and Xander Schwartz wrapped up the meet and a victory for the Jets.

Adams Central will host Columbia City Thursday night before returning to New Haven Saturday for the 10-Way.
