PORTLAND – Four Jets finished the opening week of the season for Adams Central with perfect 7-0 records, leading the team to a 7-0 mark of their own as they captured the ACAC Duals crown Saturday at Jay County with an outstanding performance.
The only true blemish on the day was a devastating injury to freshman Cruz Bowers late in the day, which resulted in his first loss of the season and may cost the team down the road.
Despite the injury to the lightest team member, the Jets had to be awfully pleased with their performances. They went through Heritage and Southern Wells with ease, taking advantage of an early bye to be at their best against a South Adams team that was hungry for an upset.
Using an unchanged lineup throughout the day, the Jets were on the front foot from the very start, winning the opening bout at 138 when Myles Kaehr found the takedown he needed to beat Will Patterson.
Adams Central then took care of business, winning the ones they should against their rivals and keeping the losses to decisions and majors. Clay Fiechter and Max Nussbaum both saved team points with their efforts in losses and the Jets played the lineup shift correctly at the heavy end of the lineup, swapping places between Ethan Funk and Ryan Beer and scoring 12 team points at 215 and 285.
By the time Cruz Bowers got the quick pin at 106, the Jets had an insurmountable 40-8 advantage. The Starfires got the match back to 8-5 in bout victories, but much like they did to start the dual meet, they scored another victory in the toss-up category when Kale Beer handed Dakota Sprunger the first loss of the senior’s season to end the match, 3-0.
Adams Central then swept Woodlan and won ten of 14 from Jay County in perhaps the most satisfying victory of the day for the team.
The medical forfeit at 106 in the final dual meet against Bluffton caused the scoreline to be deceiving, with Bluffton cutting the gap to 49-25.
The Jets will face seven more duals in the coming week and a 7-0 record would put them in contention for a very high seed in the 1A Team State tournament in January.
