NEW HAVEN – With two key wins already in their back pockets from Friday night, the Bellmont Braves entered Saturday’s second day of competition in the NE8 duals with lots of confidence and they needed every ounce of it, narrowly defeating New Haven to finish 7-0 and move to 22-0 on the season heading into next week’s showdown with Adams Central.

For a summary of Friday night’s opening two rounds, read our story here.
The six point victory for Bellmont over the Bulldogs was a bit surprising after New Haven fell to East Noble 54-20. The Braves had already defeated East Noble by a similar score, 52-30, on Friday night.

The Braves pounded the two weakest teams in the conference with 13-1 margins in bouts, beating DeKalb 72-4 and Norwell 73-6.

The one concerning result from Saturday’s performances was the loss of two seniors due to an injury. 215 Doug Hamilton sustained a significant knee injury off the mats during warm-ups and could be done for the season, while Landon Rich was taken down with force against New Haven, with his hip taking much of the force. Rich went limp and was pinned in just 11 seconds and had to be helped off the mat. Backup Braxton Arriaga, who is also dealing with an injury, was also pinned quickly in the team’s only loss against Norwell in the final round.

Ahead of the New Haven dual, the Braves were pushed pretty hard by Columbia City and Leo. Grady Baker suffered his second loss of the season, falling to highly-ranked Isaiah Coolman. The big Lion took Baker down in each of the three periods and did not allow an escape in his 10-0 major decision win.
New Haven actually won the two swing matches in the matchup with the Braves, winning 6-0 with Malachi Thullner over Gabe Myers at 144, and again at 165 by a score of 9-8, but the Braves still had seven wins and 41 points to go with it for the team win.
Bradley Baker clinched the victory with a first-period fall in the penultimate bout.

The weekend ended for Bellmont with a pin win for Blake Christner at 215 (see below).

The Braves are now 21-0 on the season and will wrestle just one more dual between now and Team State on January 10th, that being the rivalry match between Bellmont and Adams Central on December 23rd.

Two Braves wrestlers have come through the first half of the season unscathed, with returning state qualifiers Henry Faurote and Xavior Palacios both at 21-0.
Additionally, four BHS wrestlers have records of 19-2 after the opening month. Bradley Baker, Ben Mills, Gabe Myers and Grady Baker give the team one wrestler in each grade with that mark.
Sam Wolpert and Charlie Faurote are both 17-3.
