NEW HAVEN – Two rounds, two wins.
The Bellmont Braves remained unbeaten on the season after scoring victories in the opening Friday night rounds of the NE8 Duals at New Haven, beating East Noble and Huntington North by similar scores and setting up the team for a run at the team title Saturday.
The matchup with East Noble was highly anticipated heading into the night, and, despite losing two of the first three bouts, the dual meet started at a decent starting weight for the Braves.
Freshmen Bradley Baker and Oliver Faurote had great wins by fall, even though both of them gave up takedowns to start off their bouts.
Those come-from-behind wins gave Bellmont a lead they would not relinquish, and by the time Henry Faurote took out Dane Pippenger, the match was squarely in Bellmont’s favor.
The Braves further cemented their lead with bumping Austin Manley up to 175, sacrificing freshman Owen Shane to EN quarterback Rylee Biddle, but winning the six points back with Manley.
The starting weight was even better for Bellmont in the second round and they were up 45-0 on the Vikings before HN knew what had hit them. The upper weights, though, had their way with the Braves and Xavior Palacios was the only win for Bellmont in the final five bouts.
The team will likely see New Haven as the biggest challenge on Day Two.
