DANE FUELLING

DECATUR – The disparity in readiness to wrestle was evident Thursday from the very start of the dual meet between Bishop Dwenger and Bellmont as the Braves won 66-10. Sweeping the seven JV matches quickly, the Braves showed that they’ve been through a dozen duals and a JV tournament already this season, while Bishop Dwenger had just three practices since their state championship in football.

A pin in the very first bout for Bishop Dwenger was almost too quick to gain any momentum, and coupled with an immediate forfeit at 190, it did little to register with the mood of the night.
That forfeit was taken by Braxton Arriaga, who was inserted by coach Tim Myers so that Xavior Palacios would take the mat. He had no issues with the Dwenger 215, winning with a fall with a few seconds left in the first.

Grady Baker, Cam Barger and Bradley Baker all followed up the win by X with second period falls of their own, using the first period to collect eight takedowns before getting serious in their second periods.

That brought up the match of the night at 120, where Oliver Faurote showed off his black eye from the Goshen Duals to the home crowd and wrestled like a battler. Faurote got the opening two takedowns, then Hudson Trahin turned around and got two of his own, before the Bellmont freshman got two more and took a 15-10 lead into the third period.

Faurote chose bottom and was turned once for three points, but he kept his shoulder in its socket and would not go over a second time, holding on for a painful 15-13 decision.
Dwenger did finally win another at 126 with their senior stud, Simon Cornewell, who shut out Ben Mills, handing the Bellmont 126 just his second loss of the year, 10-0.

Luke Ruble’s pin at the buzzer of the first period at 132 ushered in a run of quick victories, with the Braves scoring three fast tech falls and pins by Sam Wolpert and Austin Manley to end the night.

The Braves will have the weekend off before they wrestle South Adams at the StarDome on Tuesday.
