DANE FUELLING

SYRACUSE – Bellmont built a 47-11 lead in their season opener at Wawasee and showed off a lineup with five hungry freshmen in a 53-26 win that will kick off an eight-day period that will see the team wrestle twelve times.

The Braves won nine matches (one by forfeit) and had two important falls in the third period to seal the victory, although the most talked-about match may end up being one of the team’s five losses.

Wrestling state-ranked Cavan Tom, who went to state last year, Charlie Faurote showed his abilities in his debut match with a pair of takedowns against the senior, building a 6-2 lead midway through the second period.
Guarding a three-point lead, Faurote chose neutral in the third and Tom found a takedown and a four-point nearfall to flip the script and claim a 10-6 win.

The Braves got revenge, though, at 157, where Owen Shane was subbed in for the injured Sam Wolpert. Shane was trailing 6-1 and hit with a stalling warning in the second period before turning things around with a quick takedown and fall in the third period.

Shane copied the third-period fall of Ben Mills, although the junior was in control of his match from the start with some early nearfall points.
Mills’ win was the first even match in the dual, with the bouts before that point all ending quickly.

Seniors Xavior Palacios and Grady Baker had no issues with big wins, and their classmate Douglas Hamilton did a nice job against state-ranked Derek Morrison to give up just five team points by coming off his back.

Of the five freshmen in the lineup, Shane, Camron Barger and Bradley Baker all claimed wins. Barger needed just 33 seconds to win at 106 and Baker accepted the Wawasee forfeit at 113.

Sophomores Luke Ruble and Gabe Myers were scoring machines, picking up big wins.

Henry Faurote took the early team lead in takedowns with four lightning-fast three-pointers before going for the fall in 65 seconds.
The Braves will step back on the scales Tuesday at Snider, a place where they’ve struggled in recent years.
