Critters took over Riverside Center in Decatur Saturday afternoon.
Big critters. Little critters. Critters that barked. Critters that meowed. Critters with wings. Critters with long tails. Critters that slithered.
The occasion was the Decatur Parks and Recreation Department’s annual animal adoption event.
A nice-sized turnout of people came out to look over the numerous animals and, hopefully, some –critters, not people – latched onto a new home.

The parks department partnered with several animal-welfare groups to hold the event in the big room at the center.
Represented were PAWS of Adams County, Werling Wildlife Rehabilitation & Education Center, Lennox Legacy Rescue Inc., and the Adams County Animal Shelter.
The Werling organization also held a fundraiser for the local Hero Meals group. Donations of boxes of cereal, canned soup, and canned veggies were requested, and cash donations were accepted.

Hero Meals is a community-based organization that provides free and nutritious meals to North Adams Schools students and their families.
Meals include primarily non-perishable food items which can easily be prepared to meet a family’s needs through weekends and holidays. Any student who is eligible for the Free & Reduced Meals program at North Adams qualifies to participate in Hero Meals.
Hero Meals volunteers gather each week to fill bags with the food items which are then taken to the school.
