The Huntington North Vikings, fresh off their first win of the year over Columbia City in Week 4, scored the first 42 points of the ballgame Friday in Decatur, jumping out to a 42-0 lead against winless Bellmont to move to 2-1 and a tie for second place in the NE8 at the midpoint of the season.

The Braves allowed Huntington North to score in five of their six possessions and tossed in a pick-six to trigger a running clock in the second half. To their credit, the first-team players for the home team played hard in the second half and earned two touchdowns to soften the blow of the final score.

The Vikes came into the contest with gaudy passing numbers and very little success on the ground and the Braves, who created some turnovers last week against Norwell, were unable to stop the air attack and also came up empty handed on the turnover front.
Lathen Janes needed to complete just nine passes to rack up 219 yards passing, including two TDs in the first quarter. The sophomore also ran for 31 yards, including the final nail in the coffin as far as the game’s outcome was concerned, putting the visitors up 35-0 with four minutes to play in the opening half.

Sawyer Carl ran for 95 yards on just six carries to lead the victors.

For Bellmont, much of the offense came in the second half. Corbynn Omlor had 44 yards on his last two touches and freshman QB Charlie Faurote reached the 100-yard mark in passing with his final completion to Jason Lykins in the fourth quarter.

Lykins had 26 yards on seven carries and also had a touchdown.
Bellmont senior Grady Baker had two sacks in the second half to give the defense some highlights. The Braves finished the game with several key injuries, unfortunately, with Diego Arriaga and Dylan Painter sustaining injuries that caused the running clock to stop in the second half.

The Braves face a tough task over the next couple weeks with Leo and New Haven both having solid showings in their Week 5 matchups. They’ll go on the road to take on the Lions next week. Fans can hear that game live on WZBD’s YouTube channel.
