GIRLS SOCCER
Kaitlyn Barton’s goal was the only thing separating the Bellmont Braves from the Northrop Bruins Thursday night. The sophomore’s first-half goal held up through a very physical game as the Braves welcomed a new opponent to Decatur, beating the Bruins 1-0.

Assisted by Ashley Bleke, Barton scored her sixth goal of the season to get the Braves the win.
Northrop entered the game with a 6-1 record, having only lost to Bishop Dwenger 1-0 this season. They also carried early-season wins over DeKalb, Columbia City and Concordia Lutheran – all familiar opponents to the Braves – with a 13-1 combined advantage in those three wins.

The win was especially sweet for head coach Steve Lee, who took a gamble adding yet another top team to the Braves’ already crazy schedule. The Bruins were ranked in the top 30 overall in Indiana by MaxPrep’s rudimentary computer rankings.
The victory over the Bruins was also an important kickoff to a seven-day stretch for the team that will see them NE8 rivals Leo Monday, and Snider on Wednesday. A 3-0 mark in that stretch would be a massive achievement, but it aligns with the high standards set by Lee for his team.

Wednesday’s match against Snider will be broadcast by WZBD.

Also on Thursday night, the Heritage Patriots picked up an impressive victory on the road by beating the North Side Legends.

Sophomore America Garcia provided both goals for the Patriots, with classmate Rosie Kyi providing the assists on one of the goals.
Taylynn Mart only needed to make one save to score the win as the defense held the Legends in check.

BOYS SOCCER
The Bellmont Braves were quickly out of the game Thursday at Blackhawk Christian, who were coached by Bellmont grad Sam Meyer. The BCHS Braves jumped out to an early 5-0 before taking their foot off the gas and clearing their bench out of respect for their opponents.

Blackhawk added a sixth goal in the second half to make the final score 6-0. Sophomore Grayson Riehm played much of the latter stages of the game in goal, holding Blackhawk to just one goal.

The Braves are back in action at home on Saturday against Eastbrook.

Heritage won their match against North Side, 2-1.
