The Bellmont Braves overcame the loss of a player due to illness during Tuesday’s home match against Columbia City to take a precious conference victory away from the Eagles with just four varsity players.
It took a career-best night from all four players to soundly beat the NE8 rival, 197-227.
Ella Hockemeyer was at her best to continue leading the varsity, taking her best score on the front nine at Cross Creek from 44 earlier this year down to 41. She made a birdie-two on the short seventh hole as part of her round. The score of 41 was her best nine-hole score on any course this season and represents the joint-best effort of her high school career on those nine holes.

“Ella played a solid round to lead the effort tonight,” noted head coach Mike Macke. “That’s where she expects to be scoring and will soon break 40 for her round the way she is playing. Her round featured a birdie and three pars.”
Kinley Martin, the Braves No. 3, also shot her best round on the front nine, helping the team to a team score of 197 with a round of 53. The same can be said for Ava Billman and her round of 52.
Lyla Post shot 51, lowering her career best on the front nine with four bogeys in her round.
“It’s just a matter of time until the whole team breaks 50 on the same night,” said an excited coach after the win.
The match also represented a major step forward for the Bellmont program from the JV perspective. Five girls, all of them new to the program this year (and some new in recent weeks), came in at 61 or lower. The junior varsity was defeated by their Columbia City counterparts, but they were only five strokes behind the CC Varsity.
