The Decatur Police Department is losing another officer, but Chief Kevin Gerber has someone ready to fill the vacancy.
Gerber told the city’s board of works and safety at its recent meeting that one of the department’s officers is expected to make a lateral move to the Indiana State Police.
The officer is likely to stay with the local PD through the end of the month.
The chief said he has a candidate in mind to fill the vacancy, one who had his name in the fold the last time there was a new hire.

The board gave Gerber the okay to begin the usual hiring process for the applicant
Once hired, the new officer will have to pass the training required at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield.
MONEY MATTERS: Gerber also informed the board that the department is now using the PayGov system, which will allow people to use a credit card instead of having to have cash.
It will be particularly helpful for golf cardcart and UTV registrations.
The board also approved the chief’s request to increase the department’s petty cash fund from $200 to $400.
The $200 amount has been in existence since 2016 or 1027, Gerber noted.
