One of the most popular ideas that Decatur has seen in years has been given a new green light.
City council recently approved a third year of hanging banners to honor military veterans. The banners are placed on city light poles.

The program was initiated by and is operated by the Adams County Antoine Rivarre chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The group has a date to get the third round started. Denise Franz said she has booked Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the Adams County Public Library in Decatur for giving out applications for the new round of banners.
Antoine Rivarre chapter members will be passing out applications from 2-5:30 in the Decatur Meeting Room.
Families pay for the banners which are then returned to them after Veterans Day.
Further details will be announced later.
“This is a great thing; they look great downtown,” Mayor Dan Rickord said as approval was quickly given.
MANY MORE: The first year of the program, 36 veterans banners were hung. This year, the second for the Antoine Rivarre program, the number jumped to 53.
And, Franz said a couple of weeks ago, she already has 14 requests on a waiting list.
The banners will remain in place until Veterans Day, November 11.
All the banners are placed in the downtown area, although the increased numbers this year have pushed that “area” to the vicinity of West End restaurant on Monroe St.
There are none in the immediate downtown on Second St. as city officials leave those poles open to hang banners for special events.
The Antoine Rivarre chapter handles all aspects of the project with no cost to the city – other than employees mounting and removing the banners – nor paperwork nor liability.
