South Adams led for nearly the entire game Wednesday in their sectional opener against Whitko, but a three-run rally in the top of the sixth flipped the game in the Wildcats’ favor and they advanced to take on Adams Central or Woodlan in the 2A baseball sectional in Monroe.
The Starfires, trying to break a four-game losing streak by winning a postseason game, tallied single runs in each of the first three innings to build their lead. Kaleb Minger singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jax Wanner in the first, then Manny Juarez drew a two-out walk and used his speed to score in the second. Minger singled again his next time up and scored the Stars’ third run.
Riley Harman, the Whitko starter, settled down after Minger scored the third SA run, setting down 15 of the next 17 batters he faced to earn the victory. A walk by Luke Bauman and a single in the seventh by Hunter Fields were the only two baserunners for the Starfires late in the game. Harman struck out 14 in the game, with just one of his runs being earned.
Jax Wanner got the start for the Stars and allowed just one run while striking out five in 4.1 innings of work.
Derek Weaver was charged with the three runs in the sixth for the loss.
The Starfires finished the year at 5-21.
