Eran Hackman’s first Decatur City Council ,meeting on May 20 wasn’t like most of them will be, with council chambers full of people (for comments on the Pride festival) and the meeting stretching out to a greater length then usual.
But it went smoothly for the city’s new clerk-treasurer, who officially stepped into the role on May 12.
She replaced Kevin Hackman, who had held the position since January 1, 2024. Kevin Hackman had been elected to replace Phyllis Whitright, who had retired after 26 years.

One of council’s official duties during the meeting was making a matter of record the fact that Eran and her deputies took the oaths of office.
The deputies are Wendi S. Gephart, who has been in the office since 2010, and Cherie Bienz, on the job since 2022.
A Republican caucus chose Eran Hackman to take over the clerk-treasurer post.
Eran, who has a bachelor’s degree in business from Ball State University, had been serving as chief deputy recorder for Adams County.
