DANE FUELLING

South Adams’ strong postseason continued Saturday at the Jay County Regional, with the Starfires keeping postseason runs going in five different weight classes.
Chief among them is 126, where Dakota Sprunger became a regional champion with a dramatic victory over Kale Beer for the third consecutive weekend.
Sprunger gave the Stars their first win of the day with a fall in the quarterfinal round, opening the gate for four more teammates to join him next week at the Coliseum.

The Starfires got expected victories from guys like Will Patterson and Wes Summersett in that opening round, but also picked up some bonus wins with close decisions for Wyatt Mann at 144 and Nathan Plattner at 165.

Sprunger and Patterson reached the finals for the third week in a row with comfortable victories in the semifinals, but the Stars were pinned in their final three semifinal bouts, leaving them with three opportunities to take third-place points.
Sprunger used the same formula to take out Beer in the 126 final, using his superior riding ability to hold on to his title victory.

Patterson was no match for Sam Mosier at 132. The Delta wrestler used the Eagles’ momentum in the early part of the final round to score a first-period fall.

The Starfires won their first two third-place matches, with Wyatt Mann showing plenty of passion and grit in his win over Jacob Unger of Cowan.

Nathan Plattner then showed how dangerous he is with a win over Noah Modglin of Cowan by fall. In a bit of irony, Modglin began the Starfire season in the very first bout of 2024-25 by tech falling Wes Summersett way back in December.

The final bout of the day did not go the Stars’ way, with Wes Summersett being the victim of a revenge match for Adams Central’s Matt Heiser. After pinning Heiser last week in the sectional championship bout, Summersett was tech falled by the AC senior.
The Stars finished in sixth place, 5.5 points behind host Jay County for fifth.
