A thrilling victory in the final seconds against Tell City in the semifinals gave Adams Central a memorable day as they hosted the IHSWCA 1A Team State championship, finishing second to first-time champions North Miami Saturday.
After soundly defeating Northfield in the opening round (59-20), the Jets faced a talented Tell City team that had pushed them over the last decade at Team State.

Chase Stephens, whose wrist injury was supposed to rule him out of any involvement for the Marksmen, led off the dual meet with a win at 144, pinning Brason Schortgen in an outstanding display, flipping the script on the Jets, who seemed to be the favorites to advance.

It set in motion a series of matches that will go down in the annals of BAGUBAS history.
Mav Dubach avenged Brason’s loss with a fall of his own, but the Jets could not score falls at 157 or 165 – despite Max Byerly and Jaret Smith having advantages.
That brought up the Terry brothers and the rest of the talented Tell City upper weights and they quickly put 17 team points up in three bouts, putting them up 23-15.

Then came a crazy match at heavyweight – one that seemed destined to do anything but last the full six minutes.
That is, however, what Gavin Rumple and Angus Machen did, thrilling the two fan bases until Machen won the bout 12-11.

A fall at 106 gave Tell City a lead of 31-15 with just five bouts remaining and made the math incredibly difficult for a Jet win to be the result.

Myles Kaehr (shown above) kept the Jets in the match with a fall, however, at 113 and Coltan Everett did just as much, somehow avoiding the fall in a point-saving, 18-3 loss to Walter Hagedorn, leaving the Jets down 37-21 with three to go.

Kale Beer avoided winning by tech fall with a fall as he led 14-0 for another improbable outcome for the Jets at 126 and Jackson Bingham did what he needed to do to give his team a chance, tech falling Silas Knapp 19-4.
That put all the weight of the city of Monroe on Dylan Ogg in the final bout. Coach Tony Currie knew that a tech fall and a 37-37 tie would not go the Jets’ way, although it is unclear if Tell City knew of that fact as soon as Currie’s staff.
Either way, the task was a difficult one. Ogg was easily the superior opponent and could have easily tech falled Kason Naviaux in minutes if he had desired.

Instead, the only acceptable result for Ogg was a fall. The hysteria of the bout is hard to put into words, which is why we would ask fans to listen to the audio instead:

The Jets did not let up against their opponent in the finals – North Miami – but the matchup did not favor them nearly as well. Adams Central won the two toss-up matches, decisions by Jaret Smith and Matt Heiser, to take an 18-0 lead to start the match, but the rest of the bouts were all lopsided, and the Warriors won seven of the next ten.
While the teams split 7-7 the 14 bouts, it was the extra falls by North Miami that made the difference, leaving the Jets to settle for another second place finish.
