Going into Saturday’s Team State as the #5 seed but without their best wrestler, the South Adams Starfires were bound to have difficulty competing with the state’s top teams, but the loss of Isaiah Meyer was acutely painful to the Stars because of the three forfeits they were carrying.
At the end of the day, the Starfires went 7-7 and lost their opener, dropping into the consolation bracket before eventually rounding out the day with another 7-7 loss in the race to avoid last place.
Without Meyer, the Stars did not have enough to overcome Alexandria in the opener, losing 41-40. The only way to beat a team that scores 41 points is to pick up seven falls and that was never going to happen after the Stars won the very first bout of the day with a major decision.
Alexandria took their three forfeits at the upper weights and then hung their hats and pinned their hopes on Ezra Fye at 120 and he came through with a first-period fall to clinch the match for the Tigers.
The loss meant that the #5 Starfires could do no better than 11th place and it did nothing but deflate the attitude of the team, who entered the week with dreams of reaching the semifinals.

Switzerland County, wrestling at a Team State for the first time, won three of the first four bouts against the Stars, then chose to forfeit to Wes Summersett at 175 so that Jacoby McKay could take a forfeit at 190. The move ultimately made the difference as the dual meet because both teams came into the day with forfeits at 190, 215 and 285.
South Adams won four of the final five weights, but they trailed 29-10 entering that stretch and needed to win out to win the dual.
Will Patterson had the first takedown at 132, but was pinned by Dakota Fields in the second period to end the hopes of a ninth-place Starfire finish.
A surprise fall by Titus Loshe late in the dual with Milan for 11th place was not enough for a team victory after the Indians’ Matthew Baylor won the most exciting bout of the dual meet against Dakota Sprunger, 6-3.
South Adams will have the week to get healthy before competing in Saturday’s Garrett Invite.
