A couple of big swing matches spoiled a good night for the Adams Central Jets against a very good Homestead team Tuesday night, but the BAGUBAS still picked up a couple of important wins in their final trial before Saturday’s Team State.
Kale Beer and Brason Schortgen won key bouts against tough opponents with decisions, while Mav Dubach tech falled #16 Ben Hartzell in the night’s very first varsity bout, but the Spartans took the match 50-21.
Dubach had no issues turning Hartzell in the opener at 157 and won 18-2, but Homestead seized all the momentum by winning with a quick throw at 165 and then spoiling Matt Heiser’s night at 175.
The AC senior was up 8-3 in the third period and tossed by state-ranked Jake Thrash for a disappointing loss to put the home team up 12-5.
Adams Central cut the score to 12-9 with a great win by Max Nussbaum at 190. The freshman trailed 5-1 after being put to his back in the first period, but went on a run and won 15-5 for bonus points.
Homestead won the next five bouts until Kale Beer stopped the run at 126 with his win over Kaeden Benedict, a senior who came into the night with a 21-5 record. Benedict got the opening three, but Beer took the lead with a takedown of his own at the end of the first and then wrestled the entire second period on his feet with Benedict.
An escape with his choice in the third and a penalty point for an illegal hold by Benedict when Beer was deep into a shot gave the AC sophomore enough of a lead that he could afford to give up a stalling point in the dying moments of the bout and still win 6-4.
Brason Schortgen needed a third-period takedown to wrap up his match against Ian Hutchinson, winning the bout at 150 by a score of 5-0.
