The South Adams Starfires navigated four rounds of duals at New Castle Saturday without a blemish and their reward was an opportunity to move up the state rankings and the Team State seeding list if they could capture a win over Rossville in the final match.
Wrestling with three forfeits in the lineup all day, the Starfires had a favorable matchup with Rossville, with their most talented wrestler, Noah Weaver, lining up with the SA forfeit at 215.
The Starfire coaching staff pulled off the right move by bumping Wes Summersett up to 190, where he scored a fall, and the Stars gained 12 points back with Rossville forfeits at 106 and 120.
South Adams then trailed 34-30 with three bouts remaining and it was up to Dakota Sprunger to come up with a win against the tough Luke Weaver. Sprunger’s 9-7 win at 126 is easily the biggest individual bout of the season for the Starfires.
Will Patterson followed it up with a quick fall, turning the pressure on Eli Loshe to stay off his back and secure the win with the Stars leading 39-34. Loshe did just that, safely losing his bout by decision, 6-1, and securing the team victory over the #3 team in the state in 1A.
Dakota Sprunger finished 5-0 on the day for coach Sawyer Miller.
Also scoring five wins on the day were Will Patterson, Wyatt Mann, Wes Summersett and Max Adams.
