Decatur’s worst railroad crossing – the worst of several less than desirable crossings – is becoming one of the best.
Two employees of LandRail, Inc., of LaOtto, began work on the Dayton Ave. crossing Wednesday and were expected to finish on Thursday.
The night before the repairs began, Decatur Mayor Dan Rickord said at a city council meeting that that he recently got together with officials of Bunge North America in Decatur and the Chicago, Fort Wayne & Eastern Railroad and obtained an agreement that something will be done soon at the crossing.
The mayor explained that the Bunge and CF&S officials said they would do a “band-aid” repair job at the outset.
“They said, then, that they would do a better job next spring, Rickord noted.
A LandRail employee at the crossing on Wednesday confirmed just that. “This will be only temporary,” he said. “Next spring we will do a more extensive job.”
