A nearly sold-out Memorial Coliseum crowd roared its approval as the Fort Wayne Komets unveiled a huge flag at center ice Saturday night, highlighting the hockey club’s Military Appreciation Night.
Although the Komets annually hold ceremonies honoring military veterans, this was the first time the flag punctuated the event.

Komets players (in white in photo) helped a crew of volunteers hold – and wave – the flag.
A crowd of 9,325 continued roaring its approval as the Komets defeated Kalamazoo, 4-3, improving to a 7-1 start to the season..
The Fort Wayne players wore special uniforms which were sold to the public through an auction. A total of 27 uniforms raised an estimated $10,000 which will be donated to two local veterans organizations: the Warrior Breed Motorcycle Club and the NE Indiana Base Community Council.
Alex Aleardi’s jersey brought the most money, $801, while Kyle Mayhew’s brought in $765 and Nick Deakiin-Poot sold for $654.
All American Stores – which has a store in Monroe – sponsored the special night.
