Adams Central needed every second and every placement point to beat out the Leo Lions for the team title in the girls’ race at the Bellmont Cross Country Invite Wednesday.
Shortened to a two-mile (3200 M) event due to the heat, the Jets overcame a 1-2 finish by the Lions to win the title. Last year’s event was completely canceled due to a similar heat wave.
The Jet’s depth was key in winning the trophy. AC’s fourth- and fifth-place runners finished 18th and 19th (and sixth-best was 20th), allowing them to edge Leo, whose fifth runner was back in 23rd.
Addison Gilbert was the top finisher for the Jets in the different format, beating out Madison Gerber and and Madison Hamilton, who were 6th and 7th, respectively.

Bellmont took fourth place among the six full teams. Freshman Sydney Angel continues to lead the Braves and she finished with a time of 14:28.2.

Ava Smith had a strong run for the Heritage Patriots, finishing in 10th as an individual. The team is still without a fifth runner to compete as a team.
