The process of adding a new full-time firefighter to the Decatur department is moving along.
Fire Chief Jeff Sheets told city council at its recent meeting that a group of 10 applicants for the position has been winnowed down to seven.
“So now we’ll be starting our second round” of testing, Sheets said.

The person eventually chosen will still have to pass a battery of physical and psychological testing by the state before joining the local department on a probationary status.
A full-time firefighter will be the department’s 10th, bringing it up to full capacity.
The department currently has a full staff of 25 paid-on-call volunteers.
