The numbers are looking strong for the Decatur Fire Department.
Chief Jeff Sheets recently told city council that he had 10 applicants for a full-time job on the department.

That is an unusually high number since recent openings on the department haven’t drawn nearly that many job seekers.
The applicants were put through aptitude and agility tests as the winnowing process began.
The department also has strong numbers among paid-on-call volunteers, with the current 25 representing a full staff.
The choice among the latest applicants will bring the career firefighter numbers to 10, also a full staff.
The chief told the city’s board of works and safety that he is putting together a training policy, something “that we never really had that I know of.”
Such a policy could help the city get a better insurance rating and therefore gain a better rate.
The board gave its blessing.
