Is a 45 mph speed limit too high for an area on Mercer Ave., just south of Adams Memorial Hospital?
That was a question posed by Councilwoman Jenny Bowers-Shultz at the latest meeting of council.
Bowers-Shultz said the question was put to her by a concerned city resident.

Part of the concern is due to the area where the Rivergreenway Trail opens onto Mercer Ave. for crossing to the other side of the street.
And that crossing is at the bottom of a small rise in the street. Posted signs show a speed limit of 45 mph.
Bowers-Shultz noted that traffic on that portion of Mercer Ave. has increased in recent years due to growth at the Woodcrest Retirement Community.

Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert said that to lower the speed limit more than five mph would require a traffic study.
After some further discussion, it was decided to have Gilbert look into doing a traffic study.
