Herbert N. “Herb” Banning Jr., 81 of Decatur, Indiana passed away Sunday afternoon, May 12, 2024, at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.
He was born on May 30, 1942, in Decatur, Indiana, to the late Herbert N. Banning Sr. and LouAnna R. (Houk) Banning. Herb was united in marriage to Jeanett K. Fuelling on October 28, 1962, she preceded him in death on June 16, 1993. He then married Sharon (Schaekel) Fuelling on July 2, 1994.
Herb was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Fuelling, where he was a Deacon, and he formerly was a member of Antioch Lutheran Church in Hoagland.
Herb worked as a telecommunication specialist at Sprint, now known as Brightspeed for 43 years. He also assisted in the family farming operation with his wife, Sharon as they bailed hay, raised beef cattle and farmed.
Herb was an avid gardener, who was very passionate in how his garden was operated. He loved IU basketball with a bowl of popcorn and traveling.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Banning of Decatur, Indiana; daughter, Judy (Mark) Lengerich of Decatur, Indiana; step-daughter, Sara (Tony) Nelson, Fort Wayne, Indiana; daughter-in-law, Julie Banning of Decatur, Indiana; sister, Sue (Mark) Young of Avon, Indiana; two grandsons, Chad (Tish Perez) Lengerich of Houston, Texas and Shane (Karah Thieme) Lengerich of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Herb was preceded in death by a son, Mark Banning.
A funeral service for Herb will be held at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024, at St. Peter Lutheran Church – Fuelling with Pastor Leonard Tanksley officiating. Burial will follow at Decatur Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home – Decatur and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
