A total of 36 banners honoring local military veterans went up on light poles in the downtown Decatur area Tuesday.
City employees required approximately four hours to complete the work.
The banners – a project organized by the local Antoine Rivarre chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) – were placed on poles on Monroe, First and Third streets in the downtown area.
City officials said earlier they would leave Second St. open to the events that happen each year, and special banners that have already been purchased for those areas.
Other than getting the banners on posts, the city has no costs involved and no paperwork nor liability; everything is being handled by the Antoine Rivarre chapter.
Veterans, their families and friends paid for the banners, which will remain up until mid-November, then be given to the vets and their families.
