The Decatur Police Department has a continuing problem with its drug dropoff box, Chief Kevin Gerber told the city’s board of works at its latest meeting.
People are dropping off drugs in their containers, in small boxes, etc. That loads up the box quickly and unnecessarily, and there are times when the box is so full that it can’t be accessed at all, the chief said.
“It is an issue; we’re routinely having people coming in (to the station) and saying they can’t get something in (because it’s full.),” Gerber said.
The box has a funnel system which is for pills only. People are asked to dump the pills in and keep the container.
No pill bottles. No boxes. No liquids. No needles.
The drop box is located outdoors, on the south end of the police station. It is open 24/7 for people wanting to dispose of old and unused medications.
