Three cars of a train derailed in Adams County Saturday evening.

The derailed train in Decatur was located at W. Monroe St., which has been closed since 8:30 p.m. Saturday. The Decatur Police Department posted on their Facebook page telling residents to avoid the area of the derailed train. Decatur Police have no ETA for when the tracks will be cleared, but they advise crews will be on scene during the daylight Sunday to start the process of removing the 3 derailed cars. One of the cars is completely on its side.
Police said there are no injuries. Police also say the tanker cars are empty, and that there is no danger to the community due to the derailment.
*UPDATE* Crews will be on scene tomorrow (Sunday) during the daylight to start the process of removing the 3 derailed cars, 1 of which is completely on its side. INDOT has placed detour signs for the below mentioned routes. We will update when Monroe St is open again.
Please avoid the area of the railroad tracks that cross Monroe St/US 224 between 7th St & 8th St due to an issue with a partial derailment of a train car. At this time, Monroe St./US 224 is impassable. West bound semi traffic should use 101 N or 101 S to get around Decatur. East bound semi traffic should use US 33 E to 101 N to get around Decatur.
At this time, there is no ETA for when the tracks will be cleared. Local residents, please allow yourself extra time for your travels as this issue is addressed by the railroad. Adams St is open to traffic. Adams St is not a truck route, and the semis found off the truck route will be cited.
The tanker cars are empty, and there is no danger to the community due to this incident.
**March 10, 2024 UPDATE** Crews have been working the majority of the day on Sunday to remove the derailed cars from the roadway. At this time, Monroe St/US 224 is back open.
