The temperature was hovering in the mid-50s Wednesday night when Decatur Community Coordinator Jamie Gephart brought to city council additional signs that spring is looming around the proverbial corner.
Gephart provided event applications for numerous events which will be coming to the city along with warmer weather.
The first of 13 Thursday night concerts on the Madison St Plaza is scheduled for June 6, with the finale slated for August 29.
July 4 falls on a Thursday night this year, so that concert will held in the Riverside Center parking lot.
Some other dates:
* Motorsports Festival, Thursday, August 8.
* Germanfest, Saturday, August 17.
* Festival of the Kekionga, Friday and Saturday, August 23-24.
* Highland Games, Saturday, October 5.
* Downtown Decatur Day, sponsored by Decatur Main Street, Saturday, June 15. The event was a big success last year, with 75 vendors.
A major change this year will be the shifting of the annual Decatur Sculpture Tour from its usual Friday date to a Saturday, June 8. The tour will be held the same day as Connor Brite’s Wildflowers event,
A new event on this year’s schedule will be a Youth Concert on Thursday, September 12.
Gephart said young talent from Decatur and the area will again this year perform before or during the Thursday night concerts. Then, on Sept. 12, the young artists will return as a group and display again their various talents.
All the events and their requested street closings were approved by council.
Winding up, Councilman Matt Dyer told about a man who had recently moved to the area. Unable at first to find an apartment here, he settled in Fort Wayne. When something became available here, though, he moved to Decatur.
Dyer said the man told him: “I love everything going on in your town – that’s what made me want to live here. I love what you’re doing.”
