City of Decatur employees spent more than four hours repairing a water main break in Sunday’s bitter cold.
The report of a leak at Adams and 12th streets came in around 9:30 a.m., and city workers were on the scene until around 2 p.m., according to Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert.
Eight men were involved in the repair operation.
The temperature was hovering around the zero mark through the work, with wind chills of 20-25 mph below zero.
“It was very cold but the guys did a wonderful job getting out there and getting it fixed,” Gilbert said.
Some of the equipment, like pumps and saws, would not run due to the bitter cold, Gilbert noted.
Jared Lengerich, owner of West End restaurant, supplied the workers with hot chocolate during the work. Afterward, Two Brothers bar/restaurant, and Corey Affolder, co-owner of ABC Real Estate & Travel and ABC Cinema, treated the workers to a meal.
