A home at 1620 W. Madison St. in Decatur has been a thorn in the side of the city’s building and zoning department – which oversees code enforcement – for some time.
“This has been an ongoing thing for a couple of years,” department superintendent Curt Witte told the board of works and safety at its latest meeting.
The home (see photo) is owned by Laurie Blythe, who, Witte said, was communicating with his department at one time, but has since stopped. He believes she is still living in the home.
“I have neighbors who call me and tell me to get something done with this property,” Mayor Dan Rickord said.
“We’ve bent over backwards,” Witte added.
It was decided to notify Blythe that she has 30 days to mitigate the mess around the structure and if nothing is done, Witte will hire a contractor to do the cleanup and bill Blythe.
If the bill is not paid, a lien could be attached to the property.
