Although the pickleball courts have been in use for some time, the new complex of athletic courts behind Riverside Center in Decatur was officially opened Saturday during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The former tennis courts were reconfigured to now provide six courts. That required removing the sand volleyball court which had been in existence of years.
A new sand volleyball court was constructed on the west side of the pickleball courts, and a shuffleboard court was also added.

A pavilion was built on the east side of the pickleball courts.
Both city and county funds were used, and pickleball enthusiasts have been a key partner in the project.
Mayor Dan Rickord has praised the new setup behind Riverside Center as “a great collaboration of many.”
The courts will be open daily until 10 p.m. There is a button available to activate the lights on the courts.
