A welfare check to a home in Decatur Tuesday night has turned into what Decatur Police are now calling a potential murder-suicide. According to a post on the Decatur Police Department Facebook page, officers were called to the residence of John & Jill Evans in the 200 block of Park Place after a caller to the department was concerned because they had not been able to get in contact with Jill all day.
Officers on scene were able to eventually make entry into the residence, where they found both John (61 years old) and Jill (58) deceased inside. According to the preliminary investigation, signs lead to believe that John had shot Jill before turning the gun on himself, taking his own life. The actions appeared to have occurred several hours prior to the call received by the concerned citizen.
The Decatur Police Department does not believe that there is any sort of a specific threat to the neighborhood, or the community as a whole, as it appears to be “a very unfortunate isolated tragedy” according to the department’s post. The investigation is still ongoing by Decatur Police, Indiana State Police, and the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
Completed funeral arrangements can be found here for John Evans and Jill Evans.
