Movement toward finishing Decatur’s first dog park is continuing and officials now say they are hopeful of opening the park this fall.
The dog park is located at the site of the former Evergreen Assisted Living facility off Mercer Ave., a short distance southeast of Adams Memorial Hospital.
Fencing has been up for some time and painting of existing lights has been completed. Trees were recently planted (see photo), officials said.

In addition, picnic tables, benches, and dog waste systems have been ordered or obtained.
“The guys (city employees) have been working a lot out there; it’s getting close (to being done),” Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert told city council at its latest meeting.
Officials also explained that a gate lock system has been ordered and should be installed within the next few weeks.

For an as-yet-undetermined fee, a person will receive a key to enter the fenced-in area after providing proof that his/her dog has all proper vaccinations.
Hours the park will be available have yet to be determined.
