Taking on the defending 4A state champions and one of the top teams in the United States, the Bellmont Braves battled valiantly but fell in straight sets to the Hamilton Southeastern Royals at Carroll High School Saturday, 25-15, 25-20, 25-14.
Featuring two teams who made it to Worthen Arena last season, the highly-anticipated matchup between two undefeated teams gave the Braves a new measuring stick and a chance to put their long win streak aside and focus on another long postseason run.

Bellmont was led by MK Scheumann’s 11 kills, while Delaney Lawson was just behind the sophomore with ten kills against the Royals, who, at times, featured an entire rotation of D-I recruits.
Later in the morning the team bounced back and beat a different 4A school, Elkhart, 25-9, 25-19, 25-13. Scheumann also led the team in kills in the second round with 13, while Hailey Cole added four kills to her 11 digs and 31 assists.
The Braves will take on a pair of former conference rivals early this week, traveling to Homestead Tuesday night and hosting Carroll Wednesday night in a match set to be broadcast live on WZBD, 92.7 FM.
