Officials from the Decatur Police Department have asked all residents to avoid the area of 2nd Street from Monmouth Road to 13th Street due to a chemical leak at the Bungee plant.
Just after 3 p.m., the DPD issued the following map and began going door to door to evacuate residents.
The department made a post on social issue asking for people to avoid the area due to a “potential hazmat situation” just after 1 p.m.
Several citizens near the plant have reported a gas-like smell in the area.
Officials with the Decatur Fire Department confirmed that the city was receiving help from nearby departments, including the Fort Wayne Hazmat squad.
Drivers are asked to use Washington Street to bypass the area.
There is no timeline for when the evacuation will end.
