When Adams Memorial Hospital officials decided it would be a neat idea to give out free hot dogs and root beer floats when the hospital sponsored a Decatur appearance of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, they surely never dreamed the numbers that would be involved.
And it’s just as unlikely that Eric and Keyara Schevenius, owners of Andy & Friends Coney Bar on the Madison St. Plaza, hired to provide the special treats, would have expected what the final numbers would be.

An estimated 1,000 people turned out for the July 3 event held at Bellmont High School, most of whom were looking to do a little snacking before enjoying the music.
Eric and Keyara (photo) said afterward that they went through over 700 hot dogs! And some 400 root beer floats!
All in a span of a couple of hours. Yes, that figures out to about 350 hot dogs served each hour.
“We ran out (of hot dogs) a few times and Eric replenished us, going back and forth to Andy’s location,” Keyara said.
They had five or six Andy’s employees working the event. Meanwhile, retired parks department Nan Everett and Decatur Chamber Executive Assistant Linda Morris “jumped in to lend an extra set of hands,” according to Keyara.
Last June 9, Eric and Keyara marked their first anniversary of owning the long-established downtown business.
