The Adams County Community Foundation (ACCF) is pleased to announce that the Hope Clinic has received a grant for a Safe Haven Baby Box in the city of Berne. A Safe Haven Baby Box is a device provided under the state’s Safe Haven Law and legally permits a mother in crisis to safely, securely, and anonymously surrender her newborn.
A baby box is installed in an exterior wall of a designated place that is staffed at all times. It has an exterior door that automatically locks upon placement of a newborn inside the Baby Box and an interior door which allows medically trained staff to secure the surrendered newborn from inside the designated building. The Berne Safe Haven Baby Box is located at the EMS garage attached to the Berne Police Department.
Jim Heckman, Hope Clinic Executive Director and grant writer, expressed his appreciation for this grant, which has helped provide funding for the Safe Haven Baby Box in Berne.
Ryan Hirschy, ACCF grants committee member, added, “The Hope Clinic does so much for our residents and the ACCF is very happy to provide this support.”
This ACCF grant was made possible through unrestricted fund sponsored by the Berne Ready Mix Community Enrichment funds.
The Berne Ready Mix Community Enrichment Fund was established in 2015. Berne Ready Mix began in 1949 and has expanded into the respected company it is today. The Gene and Nancy Subler family are the recognized personalities when entering this business in Berne. The intent of this fund is to provide an annual tribute to the continued support of this community by Berne Ready Mix and its stockholders.
