Work is underway on a project to add new outdoor pickleball courts at Riverside Center in Decatur.
The sand volleyball courts, which have been situated behind the center for a number of years, are being removed, to be replaced by six pickleball courts.
A new sand volleyball court will be placed on the west side of the pickleball courts, with the fencing in that area having removed.
There is also talk of possibly adding shuffleboard courts.
The Decatur-Adams County parks and recreation department also is adding a third pickleball court to the existing two at the REV Sports Complex.
The existing courts are set up east and west, but will be redirected to north and south for the addition of the third court.
Pickleball courts already are located in Riverside Center, in the MERIT Center, and in the Adams County Service Complex.
A group of local pickleball enthusiasts, park board officials, and Adams County officials have been involved in the planning of the additional pickleball courts. The county has chipped in $94,000 toward the cost of the project.
City employees are doing the demolition and prep work, and Brooks Construction will put down the foundations.
