A highly-anticipated vote on a major restructuring of the classification of teams in sports which have four sports in Indiana was tabled Monday ahead of a meeting by the IHSAA Board of Directors Tuesday.
Since the inception of classed sports in Indiana, the classes have typically been divided into equal numbers of schools in each division. That number varies based on sport and the number of classes in a sport (football, for example, essentially has a fifth class split into 5A and 6A), but essentially, if there are 400 schools participating in a sport, the IHSAA by-laws state that 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A should all have 100 teams.
The new proposal was set to divide the classes by a set enrollment number.
Class 4A: 1,400 enrollment and up
Class 3A: 600-1,399 enrollment
Class 2A: 325-599 enrollment
Class 1A: 324 enrollment and down
This rule change was tabled and will be up for discussion again at the June 22nd Executive Committee Meeting.
Current IHSAA enrollment numbers:
Southern Wells 252
South Adams 337
Adams Central 368
Bluffton 471
Heritage 618
Bellmont 641
Norwell 790
