The City of Decatur has settled on a proposed 2024 budget of $13,513,859, an increase of $1,695,199 over the current budget of $11,819,660.
Clerk-Treasurer Phyllis Whitright submitted the new budget to city council at its Sept. 5 meeting, after she “made some adjustments” in the wake of council’s lengthy look at the numbers at its previous meeting.
That proposed budget would bring a tax rate of $1.4379 per $100 of assessed valuation. However, that figure is calculated on only 85% of the current assessed valuation (AV). The new AV numbers have not yet been received by the city, but they are likely to show an increase, which would lower the $1.4379 rate.

A public hearing on the new budget will be held at the Sept. 19 meeting of council, and final approval will come at the Oct. 3 meeting.
After final approval, it will go to Adams County Council for its approval (always automatic), then on to the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF). The DLGF can make changes in the budget it if sees fit, or let it stand as proposed.
Included in the 2024 budget is a 3% salary increase for city employees.
