A bit of shock turned to smiles for Decatur Wastewater Superintendent Karey Fuelling and Commonwealth Engineering Project Manager Ben Adams during Wednesday’s meeting of the Decatur Board of Works and Safety.
They were seated before the board when the first of two bids on a project to replace the wastewater treatment plant’s sewer 001 outfall to the St. Marys River was opened.

The first estimate, from Ottenweller Construction, amounted to $449,005 – far over Adams’ estimate for the project.
The good news came with the opening of the second of just two bids, $199,074 from Fleming Excavating, a local firm.
“That one’s right about on the estimate,” a smiling Adams (photo) told the board.

Still, the two bids were taken under advisement for a deeper evaluation.
The board did give Fuelling the okay to proceed with a project to replace an electrical panel at the North Cross Creek lift station.
It was installed in 2005 and “is getting near the end” of its life span, Fuelling told the board.
Two similar bids were submitted for the project, from Parks Enterprises and American Pump.
Fuelling recommending going with the $12,550 bid submitted by American Pump.
“They’ve been very good with our repair work” in the past, she said, so the board gave a green light to the project.
