Work in two areas is expected to begin next week as a massive water project gets rolling in Decatur.
Utilities Director Erin Heyerly passed the word to city council at its meeting Tuesday.
The project actually is divided into four projects, or phases.
The two starting next week are in the area of Seventh St. to Second St., and the other from Canterbury Drive in the Winchester Estates subdivision to Tiger’s Tail in the Meadows at Cross Creek – both at the northwest edge of the city.
It is inevitable that some streets and yards may be torn up, but the companies doing the work will use boring whenever possible, it was noted.
The federally-mandated, $17 million project is being funded through 35-year bonds and it designed to replace approximately1,000 lead service lines
Also, more than a thousand very-old water mains will be replaced as the overall project is expected to continue into next summer.
Here are the four contractors that will be doing the work:
VTF Excavation, Celina, Ohio; Yarberry Companies, Anderson; S&S Directional Boring, Bryan, Ohio, and Watson Excavating of Redkey.
Meanwhile, FWS (Fluid Waste Services) of Noblesville is traversing Decatur and checking water lines to determine if they are made of lead or copper.
