PORTLAND – The South Adams Starfires turned a good, nine-win showing in the quarterfinal round of Saturday’s IHSAA Boys’ Wrestling Sectional at Jay County into a third-place finish, claiming two individual titles in a meet dominated by Adams County teams, who swept all 14 first-place ribbons.
Max Adams and Dakota Sprunger claimed individual successes with their titles, but it was a true team effort that put the Starfires in third place (behind Bellmont and Adams Central), primed for an automatic bid now for the IHSWCA Team State next season.
The nine first-round victories all came with relative ease and were rather expected, but still necessary to constitute a good day.
It was followed up by four straight victories in the light weights in the semifinal round, with Will Patterson’s 13-8 win over Cooper Glassford a key win for coach Sawyer Miller’s team.
Seniors Wyatt Mann and Nathan Plattner joined their teammates in the finals and Wes Summersett made it seven finalists for the Starfires.
The Stars then went from seven automatic qualifiers for regional to ten with three more wins in the consolation semis. Braxtyn Hough, Eli Loshe and Nic Brewster all went from “maybes” to “tickets punched” with falls.
In the finals, Max Adams got some validation from last week’s victory, wherein he came from behind to pin Sylas Wenk in the ACAC finals. He dominated Wenk and scored the fall at 5:59 for a title at 120.
Dakota Sprunger looked like a cagy veteran in his finals match at 126, riding Ben Mills for much of the match for an 8-0 shutout title.
Wyatt Mann’s attempts at capturing a third crown were unsuccessful, but he’s still set up for a great shot at the State Finals. He simply did not have an answer for Bellmont sophomore Gabe Myers when the two were on their feet in the 144 finals.
